This is the second part of an interview conducted by “Subversive History.”
Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier is a famous — or infamous — figure in contemporary Haitian politics. Many mainstream outlets refer to him as a “gang leader” or a “warlord,” however some would suggest these labels are misleading.
One of those dissenting voices is Kim Ives of Haiti Liberté, who has been on the ground in Haiti for over 50 years providing a counterbalance to Western mainstream news coverage. In his most recent series, co-directed with Dan Cohen, entitled “Another Vision,” Ives provides another perspective on the figure known as “Barbecue,” who has been demonized by Western news outlets.
