The Marquis de LaFayette, or French General Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, was a wealthy nobleman of 18th century France. Born in 1757, he was the youngest of four children and he joined the French military at age 13. He quickly rose up the ranks and became a Major General in the army of France by the age of 18.
Volunteer in America
He decided to volunteer his services to aid the American cause in the Revolutionary War.
He arrived in America in 1777 and immediately set out to join the war effort. He became a close friend and confidante to General George Washington, who recognized Lafayette’s enthusiasm and courage, even though he was only 19 years old. With Washington’s battle tactics, LaFayette trained the American army and helped to win several of the key battles of the war. He made a significant contribution to the Revolutionary War by serving in various battles, including the Battle of Brandywine, Savage’s Station, Yorktown, and other key encounters.
Loyalty and Dedication
The Marquis de Lafayette was also very instrumental in providing supplies and funds to the American cause. He employed his influence and resources to acquire those items and transported them to the colonies. He also was responsible for delivering vital and secret messages from Washington to other leaders as he traveled constantly between the United States and Europe.
His loyalty and dedication to the American cause earned him a considerable amount of honor and respect, even from his enemies. It was for this reason that he was selected as a major-general in the Continental Army. In this role, he commanded American and French troops at the decisive Battle of Yorktown.
In the years after the American Revolutionary War, Lafayette remained a close friend of General Washington. He even made a Grand Tour of the United States in 1824 to visit his old friends in the Revolutionary War.
