Lightroom 5 is reportedly the fastest version ever. The reason for that is apparently the file parsing engine that allows images to skip over layers without having to render the layer you’re trying to edit. This way, I believe, Lightroom 5 should be faster, although my time spent on Lightroom 5 for the review is obviously somewhat limited. I also feel that Lightroom 5 is better suited for photographers who are, on average, less experienced than me. If you have an Iphone, it has a potential issue in Lightroom 5: the layer mask option doesn’t work, so you cannot apply a mask to any image using your Iphone. Having said that, a new UI mode—called Hybrid View—should be worth trying, as it allows one to see a picture as a still image as well as in a similar way as the Camera RAW view. You can also revert to the old look of Adobe Camera Raw. There are also some additional fixes for High Sierra that mean it will now display previews in the new Photo Stream options as well as the Flickr uploader. Another improvement is the added Camera Calibration (which doesn’t seem to help you that much, besides providing Help for that). On the other side, the AI enhancements don’t seem to be concerning users who are not always that familiar with advanced editing techniques. But, as mentioned, I believe the improvements are mainly for new users, who will take more time to appreciate all the new features and use them. I also use the publishing via Flickr plugin very often to publish my images from the Lightroom catalog to my Flickr account. This works flawlessly, but the publishing options for other sites are limited.
As a side note: Lightroom 5.2a and 5.x were released simultaneously. I did not upgrade from Lightroom 5, nor did I need to, to be able to use Lightroom 5.2a. I did have to download the 5.2a update separately, however.
However, Photoshop CS6 is still very important for me. No matter how good Lightroom is, Photoshop CS6 is still the better tool overall. Photoshop CS6 has way more tools than anything in Lightroom 5, and besides Lightroom 5 is mainly a catalog organization tool.
Most of us are, and have been, spoiled by the seemingly infinite number of features available in the Capture One suite. A stable alternative to that is Lightroom, as it is able to handle about one-third of the features in Capture One, on a par or better than more expensive alternatives. Lightroom already provides more than enough functionality, and Adobe’s custom DSLR capabilities, via what it calls Adobe Camera Raw add-on, are quite impressive. Lightroom 5, on the other hand, increases a suite that should be ecstatic if that was one of its biggest fears: performance. Lightroom 5 introduces a new Library and Catalog, where you can stack images in more than one catalog. If you have images organized in your usual folders, you may wonder why you would need more than one catalog. But if you decided to organize your images by subject matter (e.g. Lomography, portraits, etc.), you may need to stack your images for purposes of compatibility. Maybe it’s a lossless file type and you need to save space. It’s your call and you can choose how you want to organize your files.
