In wounded military personnel, a factor of 4-16 has been identified for combined sepsis and viral infection. It has been suggested that sepsis may play a role in precipitating a viral infection. We investigated the effect of therapy with cryoprecipitate in a group of wounded with sepsis, fungal and viral infection. We compared the in-hospital mortality, the length of hospitalization, a medical complication rate, and the delay in onset of viral infection in a group of injured treated with cryoprecipitate or fresh frozen plasma. Mortality in the group of wounded who received cryoprecipitate was not greater than the group of wounded who received fresh frozen plasma. The length of hospitalization, the medical complication rate, and the delay in onset of viral infection were longer in the group of wounded who received cryoprecipitate. Based on these findings, we conclude that although the use of cryoprecipitate in wounded with sepsis may result in fewer mortality, the therapy results in a greater risk for viral infection.A stochastic Turing network model for generalizing spike timing and synaptic time-dependent changes of synaptic transfer.
A stochastic conductance-based neuron model that includes synaptic properties corresponding to the neuron number and the presynaptic peak frequency is investigated for spike timing changes and synaptic time-dependent plasticity. Both short-term and long-term plasticity are incorporated into the model. For the first time, we analytically derive the distribution of the transfer function and the time course of the mean input into the neuron by using an efficient simulation method with a series of approximations. To simplify the simulations, we derive a simplified form of the transfer function and express the mean input current as a function of the presynaptic peak frequency. Analytical expressions of the transfer function and the mean input current reveal that the peak frequency of the transfer function, which is the critical factor in evaluating the maximum information transfer rate, is also important to determine the time course of the mean input current. To show the generality of the analytical results, we extend the simulation method and extend the stochastic neuronal model to describe any neuron model that accounts for the time-dependent conductance changes in the synapse.Q:
