Are two sets of primaries (lenses) required for a refractor?

I used to think I only needed one. I tried to reduce my scope ($5K) to something I could repair myself and it became much more expensive than that. I am working on a Celestron NexStar 3.5. Are there two (or more) lenses?

      A:

Yes, any telescope requires two independent lenses. Whether your eyepiece is a Schmidt-Cassegrain design, refractor, or camera/CCD, each assembly requires a primary and image relay lenses. If you have a 10-40mm refractor and you want to shoot deep sky objects, you will need a 10mm (3.25 inch) objective lens, a 5.25mm (1.25 inch) eyepiece, and a 1.25-inch-objective. This gives you 0.5m (50 inches) of entrance pupil distance. If you have a 10-inch refractor, you will need a 10.25 mm (3.81 inch) objective, 5.25 mm (1.25 inch) eyepiece, and a 10 mm (3.81 inch) objective. These give you 3.5m (34 inches) of entrance pupil distance.
What is the difference between a refractor and a reflector?
A reflector has a larger aperture in the object plane than the entrance pupil distance, for example, 8 inches for an 80 mm reflector vs. 4 inches. A refractor has a smaller aperture in the object plane than the entrance pupil distance, for example, 80 mm for an 80 mm reflector vs. 10.25 mm for an 80 mm refractor.
Older-model 8″ reflectors may have serious aberrations, such as coma, so they are no longer recommended.
The question is really, what is the difference between an 80mm refractor and a 10mm reflector? With a 10mm objective, 10mm eyepiece, and 80mm entrance pupil, you can have both 10mm and 80mm objectives at the same time,
