One thing is certain about the new interface: The pencil tool is a beautiful, brilliant invention. The new UI for layer based editing makes this tool even more powerful, and the Apple Pencil experience is revolutionary. For the first time in my knowledge of all things related to Photoshop, I’m not sure I’m sorry this tool came along to change the world, and I’m certainly not complaining about it. But, I’m also not in love with this UI, since I plan to use the rest of my life mixing pixels on an HD display.
After the Mac App Store came out, I felt that Adobe had lost a lot of the DIY freedom of the classic version of Photoshop. First, they introduced a new Auto-Save feature that worked well for a newbie. Next, they ditched alt-drag to a new Alt-flick. But the worst was the behind-the-scenes centralization of updates and changes that came with the App Store.
Today’s tools are just what NSA analysts ordered before Christmas. They want everything… and they want it now. They want quick in-place updates to workflows that are literally tied to their applications. The App Store is busy eating Adobe’s lunch, chasing after After Effects, ZBrush, and other cutting-edge editing tools. It obviously made sense that the App Store would make the move, but now they’re trying to hang on to that slice of Adobe’s pie with a new Photoshop Express app.
With the apps having become “snappier”, that doesn’t mean Lightroom 5 changes its behavior. That said, the changes in Lightroom 5 are, in my opinion, not revolutionary. Still, I would have liked to see some improvements here and there. For example, “Open File” and “Adjust Image” commands were previously “hidden”, and “Selection” commands no longer had a keyboard shortcut. Perhaps they have been replaced with smarter alternatives — either through a “Find” command, a smart crop tool or auto-smartening or something along those lines. I’ve never been thrilled with smart crops, however, and I’ve always disliked the crop tool in Lightroom. On the other hand, smart crops are damn fast – much faster than Lightroom or Photoshop. I just wish the crop tool could have had a more consistent look and feel, even if that meant a small reduction in speed. I have generally liked the look of the smartening reminders in Lightroom. They look modern but depend on the active state of the profile, sometimes offering a somewhat annoying “dissolve” option. This is something that could work better, though, and I would have liked to see an option to tone things down a bit on off-shift images. I’d also like to see better handling of profiles when working with RAW images. The app still has a tendency to lose the selected profile, which sometimes ends up in the option to revert to “Guessed”. I’d also like to see an option to choose an action instead of the “Guess” profile. That said, we need to consider the broader picture. Lightroom 5 is still a stable release, and Adobe has continued offering security fixes. It’s also easy to update via the Internet. In other words, you don’t have to upgrade via the Adobe Creative Cloud to avoid inconveniences.
