We now have three completely different sources of code in the same product: 1) the Photoshop code base 2) the LR code base 3) and the open source code base. This means 1) a lot of different bugs affecting Photoshop and other software that interacts with Photoshop (but not Photoshop itself), 2) a lot of work for us to integrate the open source code, 3) a lot of work for the community to test and bug-fix the open source stuff, and 4) a very confusing and often frustrating experience for users.
Can you believe it? Lightroom tried to implement 3rd party addons (e.g. GPS corrections) in the Photoshop code base, so we’ve never had a reliable, stable wrapper for 3rd party addons. In any case, one side effect of spending time on the LR code base is that I never get to do anything with Photoshop, anymore, and it’s a real shame. It’s a terrible waste of time on my part.
I did the upgrade to Lightroom 5.2 last night and I must say that I love the new and improved workflow. I have been barely using it, however, because there is this feeling that you have just turned something that used to be a tool into a complex, convoluted mess of a thing that I have to know backwards and forwards in order to make it work the way I want to. Does that make sense? I have read and re-read the guide to “how to use Lightroom” several times and I still don’t feel like I do understand what it is and how to use it. So I don’t use it.
I have been using Photoshop since it was initially released in 1990. I have used other software such as Krasneview, and SmartDraw, but most of the time I have used Photoshop because it is the only viable image and page layout software that’s actually been around for a good long while. I am not a technical person, and so I don’t have the latest versions of skills; I simply cannot afford the time and effort to master such a tool.
