I’ve been using recent versions of Photoshop CC for several months now, and I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised by how pleasant all of my day-to-day photo editing tasks are. I used to use GIMP all the time for my light photo editing, but for some reason, I just don’t use it the same way anymore — for example, when it comes to those fuzzy brush functions. Being able to select and edit the highlights and shadows, as well as dodging and burning, can be done with either OS but it just doesn’t feel right when done with GIMP. For me, the fact that GIMP is basically just an API does not really make it any more powerful than Photoshop (which both offer a full-featured API), but the real problem lies within the usability and workflow. For example, I do not like to look at GIMP’s UI every time that I want to save an edited image. It took me quite some time to see the difference between the commands in Photoshop and GIMP, and I don’t think that I am going to learn them all even when they are combined. Also, and this is a bit more subjective, for example, if I want to give some advice to a friend, the editor’s UI is just not as friendly as Exporting to a social network in the same way as with Photoshop.
This said, the new version of Photoshop CC has a very smooth and efficient feeling to it, which is something I really appreciate. How and where to get such a feeling from, however, is a bit harder to explain. The fact that, for example, tweaking shadows does not feel faster is because each of the tools is structured in a way that makes me work much faster. That’s not to say that the skin tones can’t be tweaked a little faster or that the Brush tool is not more versatile than before, it just feels slower for a particular task than it should.
Another thing that I used to do a lot in GIMP is to set the size and position of the tool. When I use Photoshop, it just feels the same way — even when I am working with a persistent tool, for example, adding a gradient and adjusting its settings, I just do not feel the same way I would with GIMP. I don’t know if the reason for this is because Photoshop has taken a lot of UI cues from OS X, Windows, or just that I am getting use to the workflow, but this is the first time that it happens to me. It just doesn’t feel so responsive which, in fact, may be a good thing and may allow me to squeeze out more performance out of the tool.
Lastly, and despite all of the fun to be had with the new features, I could not help but notice that, again for a certain amount of time, the image would get somewhat “unresponsive”. Whenever I would have to scroll through my web album, for example, I would not need to waste any time using the photo editing features, just to get rid of any problems with the image. Even though this is not exactly a downside, I believe that, needless to say, this (or something similar) should be considered in the future versions of Photoshop.
